Unleashing Employees’ Intrinsic Motivation: Strengths-based Approaches to Employee Engagement

Program Description

With unemployment rates at all-time lows, companies are investing heavily in recruiting and retention. These investments to fill roles, however, do not necessarily translate into higher levels of engagement, productivity, or even retention once employees are on the job. In fact, the most recent Gallup Workplace Survey found that only 33% of employees are “engaged” in their work and up to 25% are “actively disengaged”! So what does motivate and engage employees? HR professionals know that intrinsic motivation correlates with higher levels of work quality and job satisfaction – and that intrinsic motivators vary significantly between individuals. Trying to tap the unique intrinsic motivators of an entire workforce can seem like a daunting task, whether an organization has 50 or 5,000 employees. This session provides an overview of the rationale behind strengths-based approaches to employee engagement, performance management, and retention and offers easily scalable tactics for integrating strengths-based practices into day-to-day operations to help employees tap into their own intrinsic motivation.

Learning Objectives:

1. Articulate three research-based reasons for employing strengths-based approaches in a wide range of talent management situations.
2. Name two popular or emerging strengths-based organization development methodologies.
3. Describe the subtle ways that “deficit” focused approaches have shaped HR and management practice and the negative impact of these practices on productivity.
4. Identify three ways to immediately begin applying strengths-based interventions in their own team/department.
